GuitarFlex vs Vir2 Electri6ity and Acou6tics
Electri6ity and Acou6tics are Vir2 Instruments' two guitar libraries, for Kontakt Player: eight sampled electric guitars and six acoustic instruments, at $399.95 each. GuitarFlex is modeled, not sampled: presets for steel-string and nylon-string acoustic and electric clean, crunch and heavy guitars in one program, a download of 18.2 MB, and $79.
What they have in common
- Acoustic and electric guitars you play from MIDI, note by note.
- Nylon and steel-string acoustics. Acou6tics has a steel-string and a nylon guitar, and GuitarFlex has presets for both.
- Pickup choice. Electri6ity has three pickup options per guitar, and GuitarFlex has a Pickup panel.
- Amp, drive and EQ. Electri6ity has an Effects page with amp styles, drive and EQ. GuitarFlex has a Cabinet panel, a reverb and an eight-band EQ, and an Amp panel with voices from clean to high gain.
Where Electri6ity and Acou6tics stand out
- More guitars. Electri6ity has eight electric guitars, with more than 24,000 24-bit samples of each. Acou6tics has six instruments: steel-string, 12-string, nylon, mandolin, guitalele and ukulele.
- Instruments beyond the guitar, including a mandolin and a ukulele.
- Strum controls and key switches. Acou6tics has strum direction, strum speed and pick position controls, and a key switch page. GuitarFlex has no keyswitches and no strum patterns.
- Recorded instruments, where GuitarFlex plays no recordings.
Where GuitarFlex stands out
- $79, against $399.95 for each of Vir2's libraries, which are sold through Big Fish Audio.
- No other program. Vir2's libraries are built for Kontakt Player. GuitarFlex runs on its own, as a standalone program and a VST3 plugin.
- A stated size. GuitarFlex is an 18.2 MB download that installs at 43.9 MB.
- No account and no online activation. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, and one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers. It never connects to the internet.
- A demo you can download and try before you buy.
- Your own settings. Over 70 sliders and four slots (A to D) to switch between sounds or layer them, with Compare, Vary and Randomize.
- Your song to a file. It renders a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer.
- Built to play ComposerFlex's band, our songwriting program, on the same PC with no setup. Strums and articulations come from ComposerFlex; from a keyboard or a MIDI file it plays the notes as written.
Which to pick
- For a larger set of electric guitars, or for mandolin, guitalele and ukulele: Vir2.
- If you already use Kontakt Player and want strum controls and key switches: Vir2.
- For one small program with electric and acoustic guitars at $79: GuitarFlex.
- If you'd rather have no account, no online activation and one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers: GuitarFlex.
Owning both
If you already own Vir2's libraries, GuitarFlex can sit beside them as a guitar that plays ComposerFlex's parts. Vir2's pages have older material, so check its current system requirements, size and license terms on vir2.com before you buy. GuitarFlex's demo is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
