DrumFlex vs MODO DRUM
MODO DRUM and DrumFlex are the closest pair on this site in approach: both model the drum, and both let you shape a kit piece by piece. IK Multimedia's MODO DRUM, by the maker's words, combines real-time modal synthesis with advanced sampling, and comes with 13 kits, a mixer and a library of MIDI grooves, on Windows and Mac. DrumFlex is modeled, and plays no recordings of drums: kits for each style, a 14.2 MB download, $79.
What they have in common
- Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, with a standalone program and a VST3 plugin in each.
- Kits built from a model. IK calls its kits "physically modeled". DrumFlex plays no recordings at all.
- Control over the drum itself. MODO DRUM offers dimensions, materials, heads, tuning and sticks. DrumFlex offers stick hardness, tuning, ring, pitch glide and snare wires, and sizes for the kick and toms.
Where MODO DRUM stands out
- Mac as well as Windows, with VST2, AU and AAX plugins as well as VST3.
- More kits. 13 kits, with more at $49.99 each.
- A fuller mixer. An integrated mixer with 19 studio processors and effects. DrumFlex has one stereo output.
- Grooves. More than 1,400 MIDI grooves, which can be dragged into your DAW. DrumFlex has no library of grooves.
- A free one-kit edition. MODO DRUM CS has one kit and the full modal synthesis engine.
Where DrumFlex stands out
- Small. It downloads at 14.2 MB and installs at 31.4 MB. MODO DRUM asks for 2 GB of free disk space.
- No online activation. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, no account, and one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers. DrumFlex never connects to the internet. MODO DRUM needs an internet connection for activation.
- Every piece, tuned. Tuning, ring and muffle for the kick, snare and toms, hi-hat and cymbal ring, the kick's beater, and a level for each part of the kit.
- No two hits alike. Hit variation changes each hit a little; set it to 0 and every hit is struck the same. The same song renders the same every time.
- Built to play ComposerFlex's songs, our songwriting program, on the same PC with no setup.
- $79, where MODO DRUM is $199.99.
Which to pick
- On a Mac: MODO DRUM.
- For a mixer with many processors, or a library of grooves: MODO DRUM.
- For 13 kits, or to start with one kit at no cost: MODO DRUM.
- On Windows, with a small download and no online activation: DrumFlex.
- If you'd rather have no account, one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers, and a price of $79: DrumFlex.
Owning both
Because both are built from a model of the drum, they overlap more than most pairs, but MODO DRUM brings the grooves and the mixer while DrumFlex brings a small instrument that never goes online. Both let you try before you buy: IK's free MODO DRUM CS is on ikmultimedia.com, and DrumFlex's demo, which you can download and try before you buy, is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
