DrumFlex vs DrumComputer
DrumComputer and DrumFlex are different kinds of tool. DrumComputer, from Sugar Bytes, is a machine for synthetic drums: eight sound engines, a pattern sequencer and randomizers for new sounds. DrumFlex is an acoustic drum kit you play from a MIDI file, a keyboard or an electronic kit. For electronic drum sounds and patterns built inside the plugin, DrumComputer is the better fit. For a kit that plays a drum part, DrumFlex is.
What they have in common
- A program and a plugin on Windows, standalone and VST3.
- Randomizing. DrumComputer has randomizers for drum sounds. DrumFlex has Randomize and Vary.
- Presets. DrumComputer has more than 400 global presets and 450 engine presets. DrumFlex has kits for each style, with presets saved and loaded in both its program and its plugin.
- A demo to try before you buy. DrumComputer's is a download for Windows and Mac, and DrumFlex's is a download for Windows.
Where DrumComputer stands out
- Eight sound engines. Each layers a Resonator, a Wavetable or Analogue Oscillator, and a Resynth or Sampler.
- A sequencer inside. A 16-step, 16-pattern sequencer, with a pattern generator offering probability, rolls and swing.
- Sounds without a fixed count. Its randomizers draw on what its maker calls millions of drum sounds.
- Mac as well as Windows. macOS 10.13 or later, with AU and AAX plugins, and VST2 as well as VST3.
- Electronic and synthetic drums. It's the choice for that kind of sound, which DrumFlex doesn't have.
Where DrumFlex stands out
- An acoustic kit, modeled, not sampled. Kick, snare, hi-hat, three toms, ride, two crashes, china and splash.
- Plays a MIDI file. It opens one and plays it, takes General MIDI drum keys on any channel, and plays from an electronic drum kit that sends General MIDI drum notes (it doesn't read the hi-hat pedal's controller or cymbal chokes by aftertouch).
- Drum strokes. Cross-stick, rimshot, buzz stroke, brush sweep, ride bow, bell and edge, and an open hi-hat that a closed or pedal hit cuts short. Hit variation gives no two hits alike, and the same song renders the same every time.
- Shaping. Stick hardness, tuning, ring and snare wires, then each piece, the room and an EQ. Settings show as Hidden, Mix & touch, or All.
- Four slots to switch between kits or layer them.
- Small. A 14.2 MB download. A render of a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer, comes out ready to use.
- $79, one time, where DrumComputer is shown at $129. A license key, no account, no online activation, one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers.
Which to pick
- For electronic and synthetic drum sounds, and patterns built in the plugin: DrumComputer.
- On a Mac: DrumComputer.
- For a drum kit played from a MIDI file, a keyboard or an electronic kit: DrumFlex.
- If you'd rather have one price and no account: DrumFlex.
Owning both
A synthetic drum machine and an acoustic kit answer different needs, and many people would want both: one for electronic parts, one for a kit that plays a song. DrumComputer's demo is on sugar-bytes.de; DrumFlex's is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
