DrumFlex vs Atlas 2
Atlas 2 and DrumFlex are different kinds of tool. Atlas 2, from Algonaut, is built on samples: its tagline is "Turn samples into music", and its maker describes AI that finds and organizes your drum sounds. DrumFlex is an acoustic drum kit you play from a MIDI file, a keyboard or an electronic kit. To arrange your own samples into pads and sequences, Atlas 2 is the better fit. For a kit that plays a drum part, DrumFlex is.
What they have in common
- A program and a plugin on Windows, standalone and VST3.
- MIDI at the center. Atlas 2 imports MIDI by drag and drop and exports its sequences as MIDI. DrumFlex opens and plays a MIDI file.
- Audio files. Atlas 2 exports audio loops. DrumFlex renders a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer, and records what you play.
- Try before you buy. Atlas 2 has a 14-day trial. DrumFlex has a demo you can download and try before you buy.
Where Atlas 2 stands out
- Your samples, sorted for you. Its maker describes AI that finds and organizes your drum sounds.
- Maps and pads. Multiple maps, with pad layouts of 1x8, 2x8, 4x4 and 8x8, and a 1500 drum sample map included as an optional download.
- A sequencer. Build patterns on its pads and export them as MIDI or audio loops.
- Mac, Linux and Windows. macOS from 10.13 (Intel) or 11 (Apple Silicon) to 15, Windows 7 to 11, and Linux on Ubuntu 16.04 onward, with AU and AAX plugins as well as VST and VST3.
- Three machines. Atlas can be installed on three.
- Expansions. Premium packs of at least 100 drum kits and sequences each, and kits, sequences and loops included to start.
- $99, or $19 to upgrade.
Where DrumFlex stands out
- An acoustic kit, modeled, not sampled. Kick, snare, hi-hat, three toms, ride, two crashes, china and splash, with nothing played from recordings.
- Kits you shape. Stick hardness, tuning, ring, snare wires, each piece's tuning and muffle, the kick's beater, and a level for each part of the kit.
- A drummer's strokes. Cross-stick, rimshot, buzz stroke and brush sweep, ride bow, bell and edge, and cymbals that can be stopped. Brushes by controller 85.
- Plays from a keyboard or an electronic kit, on General MIDI drum keys on any channel (it doesn't read the hi-hat pedal's controller or cymbal chokes by aftertouch).
- Small. A 14.2 MB download, with no sample library to install.
- No internet. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, no account, no online activation, one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers. It never connects to the internet. Atlas 2 asks for an internet connection to authorize.
- $79, one time.
Which to pick

- For an acoustic kit you can tune and shape, with no account and no internet: DrumFlex.
Owning both
One builds beats from sounds you collect, the other plays a kit you shape, so they don't compete for the same job. Atlas 2's trial is on algonaut.audio; DrumFlex's demo is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
The facts side by side
