DrumFlex vs ADM
ADM, the AudioRealism Drum Machine, and DrumFlex are different kinds of tool. ADM recreates vintage drum machines (606, 808, 909), with a 32-step sequencer inside. DrumFlex is an acoustic drum kit you play from a MIDI file, a keyboard or an electronic kit. For electronic sounds and step patterns, ADM is the better fit. For a kit that plays a drum part, DrumFlex is.
What they have in common
- Standalone and VST3 on Windows. ADM runs standalone on Windows and Mac, and as VST3 on Windows. DrumFlex is a standalone program and a VST3 plugin for Windows.
- MIDI control. ADM has full MIDI CC with learn. DrumFlex answers to a keyboard, a MIDI file or an electronic kit, and plays brushes by controller 85.
- Sounds you can change. ADM has a Pattern Controlled Filter that can change on each step. DrumFlex has stick hardness, tuning, ring and more, and Randomize and Vary.
Where ADM stands out
- The machines it recreates. It recreates vintage drum machines (606, 808, 909) and has 34 sounds.
- A sequencer inside. A 32-step internal sequencer and 80+ example patterns.
- A filter per step. The Pattern Controlled Filter follows the pattern.
- Rebirth patterns. It imports them.
- Mac as well as Windows. Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later and Windows 7 or later, with VST2 on both and AU on the Mac.
- Electronic drums. If that's what you want, it's the choice, and DrumFlex has none.
Where DrumFlex stands out
- An acoustic kit, modeled, not sampled. Kick, snare, hi-hat, three toms, ride, two crashes, china and splash, in kits for metal, rock, pop, funk, jazz, smooth jazz, ballad and Latin.
- Plays a MIDI file. It opens one, takes General MIDI drum keys on any channel, and plays from an electronic drum kit that sends General MIDI drum notes (it doesn't read the hi-hat pedal's controller or cymbal chokes by aftertouch).
- Drum strokes. Cross-stick, rimshot, buzz stroke, brush sweep, ride bow, bell and edge, and an open hi-hat that a closed or pedal hit cuts short.
- No two hits alike. Hit variation gives that, and the same song renders the same every time.
- Shaping. Each piece's tuning, ring and muffle, the kick's beater, sizes, a level for each part of the kit, the room and an EQ.
- Four slots to switch between kits or layer them, and a render of a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer.
- A stated price. $79, one time, with a license key, no account, no online activation and one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers. ADM's product page doesn't state a price.
Which to pick
- For electronic sounds and step patterns: ADM.
- On a Mac: ADM.
- If you use Rebirth patterns: ADM.
- For a drum kit played from a MIDI file, a keyboard or an electronic kit: DrumFlex.
Owning both
A step-sequenced machine and an acoustic kit do different work, so you can reach for either as the song needs. ADM's product page is on audiorealism.se; DrumFlex's demo, which you can download and try before you buy, is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
The facts side by side
