BassFlex vs UJAM Virtual Bassist
UJAM Virtual Bassist and BassFlex both give you a bass part from MIDI, but they're different kinds of tool. UJAM Virtual Bassist is a family of five sampled bass instruments, each with a Player Mode of styles and phrases that follow the chords you play, on Windows and Mac. BassFlex is an instrument with no phrases of its own, modeled, not sampled: presets for electric, acoustic and upright basses, a 24.3 MB download, $79.
What they have in common
- Electric and upright basses. UJAM has four electric characters and MELLOW 2, a double bass. BassFlex has electric, acoustic and upright presets.
- Slides. UJAM's Instrument Mode includes dead notes and slides. BassFlex plays slides when ComposerFlex's parts call for them.
- An amp and effects. UJAM has amp settings and effect modes. BassFlex has a bass amp, cabinets, reverb and an eight-band EQ.
- A trial before you buy. UJAM offers a free, fully working 7-day trial. BassFlex has a demo you can download and try before you buy.
Where UJAM Virtual Bassist stands out
- Phrases and styles. Player Mode plays them from MIDI keys and follows the key and chord you play. ROYAL alone has 60 styles and 1,380 phrases; the bundle has 346 styles and 7,610.
- Note by note, too, in Instrument Mode.
- MIDI drag and drop of patterns into your DAW.
- Mac as well as Windows, with AU and AAX plugins.
- Royalty-free phrases in five characters.
Where BassFlex stands out
- A standalone program and a plugin. BassFlex has both; UJAM's pages list plugin formats only.
- Small. A 24.3 MB download. UJAM lists 7 GB of disk space.
- Offline, with no account. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers, and it never connects to the internet. UJAM lists an internet connection and a sign-in.
- Shaped by hand. Over 70 sliders, and four slots (A to D) to switch between sounds or layer them.
- Your song to a file. It renders a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer.
- Parts from ComposerFlex, our songwriting program. Palm mute, hammer-on, pull-off, slide, bend, vibrato, harmonic, slap and pop all arrive that way. BassFlex has no patterns or keyswitches, so for phrases that follow your chords, UJAM is the tool.
- $79 for all its basses, where UJAM's are $119 each at list price, or $199 for the bundle of five.
