BassFlex vs Scoring Bass
Heavyocity Scoring Bass and BassFlex are both bass instruments, but Scoring Bass is aimed at scoring. It's a Kontakt library from Heavyocity with playable bass guitars, pads, rhythmic pulses and pedals, and effects, for film and TV scores. BassFlex is a plain bass instrument for Windows, modeled, not sampled: presets for electric, acoustic and upright basses, a 24.3 MB download, $79.
What they have in common
- A playable bass guitar. Scoring Bass has an instrument with three bass guitars. BassFlex has electric, acoustic and upright presets.
- A standalone program and a plugin. Scoring Bass lists standalone, VST, AU and AAX through Kontakt. BassFlex has its own standalone program and a VST3 plugin.
Where Scoring Bass stands out
- More than a bass guitar. 4 GB of pads, tempo-synced pulses and pedals, and multi-sampled playable instruments, with 48 core and 48 effected rhythmic pedals.
- Motion. 300+ Motion presets, and a Motion page for volume, pitch and pan patterns.
- Playable Trigger FX.
- Kontakt. It opens in Kontakt (version 6 Player or later) beside your other libraries.
- AU and AAX plugins. Its page lists them, along with older systems, so check the page for what it supports now.
Where BassFlex stands out
- Nothing else to install. Scoring Bass needs Kontakt 6 (Player) or later. BassFlex needs no other program.
- Small. A 24.3 MB download. Scoring Bass is 5.7 GB uncompressed, 3.9 GB compressed.
- Acoustic and upright basses, as well as electric, with four strings and five in some presets.
- Shaped by hand. Over 70 sliders, and four slots (A to D) to switch between sounds or layer them.
- Your song to a file. It renders a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer.
- No account. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, no online activation, one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers, and it never connects to the internet. Heavyocity watermarks each download.
- Articulations from ComposerFlex, our songwriting program: palm mute, hammer-on, pull-off, slide, bend, vibrato, harmonic, slap and pop. BassFlex has no patterns, pulses or keyswitches of its own: parts come from ComposerFlex, a MIDI file or the player.
- $79, where Scoring Bass is $99 at list price.
Which to pick
- For scoring, with pads, pulses and pedals around the bass: Scoring Bass.
- If you already work in Kontakt, or want AU and AAX: Scoring Bass.
- For a bass instrument alone: BassFlex.
- On Windows, with a small download, no account and a price of $79: BassFlex.
Owning both
Scoring Bass brings the scoring material and BassFlex brings the bass you can shape, and they can sit in one project. Heavyocity's page we read doesn't state a trial, so check it before you buy; BassFlex's demo, which you can download and try before you buy, is here. This page doesn't compare how they sound. That's for your ears.
The facts side by side
