BassFlex vs MODO BASS 2
MODO BASS 2 and BassFlex are close cousins: both are modeled, so neither plays recordings. MODO BASS 2 is IK Multimedia's: 22 modeled basses and more than 1,500 MIDI bass patterns, on Windows and Mac, for $199.99. BassFlex is modeled, not sampled, with presets for electric, acoustic and upright basses, a 24.3 MB download and a price of $79.
What they have in common
- Modeled. Each note is computed as it is played, from the string, the pickup and the body.
- Windows 10 and 11, as a standalone program and as a plugin.
- Electric and upright basses in one instrument, with an amp and effects to shape the result.
- A free way in. IK offers its free MODO BASS 2 CS edition. BassFlex has a demo you can download and try before you buy.
Where MODO BASS 2 stands out
- Mac as well as Windows, with AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX plugins on Mac.
- More basses. 22 modeled basses, including fretless and double-bass models, and a 4-string can be turned into a 5- or 6-string.
- MIDI bass patterns. More than 1,500 of them. BassFlex has no patterns of its own: its parts come from ComposerFlex, a MIDI file or your playing.
- Playing style, hand position and string setup, with algorithms for pick and slap, and 32 pickup models.
- Effects and amps: 7 bass stomp effects and 2 bass amps.
- Double basses with movable microphones and a piezo signal.
Where BassFlex stands out
- $79, against $199.99 for MODO BASS 2.
- No special driver. IK lists an ASIO compatible sound card as required on Windows for MODO BASS 2. BassFlex uses Windows' own sound, with no special driver.
- No account and no online activation. A license key and your email address, entered once for each Windows user on each computer, and one license for one person, to use on all of their own computers. IK uses registration and authorization.
- It never connects to the internet.
- A stated size. BassFlex is a 24.3 MB download that installs at 50.6 MB. IK states no size for the full MODO BASS 2.
- Four slots (A to D) to switch between sounds or layer them, with Compare, Vary and Randomize.
- Your song to a file. It renders a MIDI file to FLAC, or to WAV with the included command-line renderer.
- Built to play ComposerFlex's songs, our songwriting program, on the same PC with no setup.
